Charity Matters Quotes

“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.”

Charles Dickens,Great Expectations

springtime, bees & flowers

March is upon us. For me the month is all about new life, it is the month in which all of my sons were born. A true March Madness! It is a month of renewal, spring, new flowers and more importantly a time of hope. That is what March means to me and I hope this month finds you cheering on your favorite basketball team, time in the garden and more importantly filled with hope, with what is to come.

New Orleans

“What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in New Orleans, goes home with you.”

Laurel K. Hamilton

 New Orleans

I just returned from a fun long weekend in New Orleans with my sister. I had never been to New Orleans before and wanted to share a small piece of my journey with you. I think New Orleans is a place you process more than a place you visit.  The city was all abuzz with Mardi Gras just around the corner.

I wish I could share some of the great meals but for this monday, its simply going to have to be a little memory.

One sees clearly only with the heart

“One sees clearly only with the heart.  Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.”

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince, 1943

Speaking at MSS

A few months back I was asked to give a speech at my alma matter, an all girls private Catholic school. I had been asked to speak a few times before on the topic of service and charity but this time the assignment was a bit different.  I was assigned a quote from The Little Prince and had to tie the quote into my personal story and service. I must admit it felt a bit like the homework assignments I used to dread.

However, the deeper I dove, the more fun and meaningful the assignment and speech became. Today, in looking for a heart themed quote, this same quote appeared once again. Coincidence? I don’t believe in those anymore. When I saw this quote I revisited the words I shared with the girls….

“Giving, service and charity have healed me in unexpected and unimaginable ways.  I was blind and could not see. The curve balls that were thrown to me became my greatest gifts. Those moments gave me my sight. Living the words is what made me understand what I had translated so many years ago in Mr. Olson’s room, just yards from where I now stand.  And to end where I began, although the journey continues, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

Happy Valentines Day!

“Love is a symbol of eternity.  It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end.”

 Author Unknown

Love, love, love……just as the Beatles sang….it is all you need. So glad that we have Valentines Day to celebrate the best part of being alive, being loved. I know the card companies try to make this holiday about romance but love is so much more.  Whether you are celebrating as a couple or not, celebrate the love in your life…..both what you receive and the love you give to so many.

My heart is full because you are here, so from my heart to yours a very Happy Valentines Day!

Charity Matters Quotes

“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, I used everything you gave me.”

Erma Bombeck

give-me-your-hand-5221

The other morning I woke up to one of those 3am calls when the news is never good. It was my Dad and he was heading to the ER with chest pains, complaining that “his heart felt full.” So did mine.

My Dad ended up having a procedure that removed a large blockage in his heart. He has stared death in the eyes many times and we are now referring to him as “El Gato” because he has had so many lives.  That being said, my Dad is very alive. When I think about what it is, that makes him that way, it only comes down to a few words….faith, family, friends and gratitude.  That is his life.

When his time does finally come (and I hope that is a long way off) I know that he will have answered Erma Bombeck’s quote correctly. He will not have a single bit of talent left and say he used everything he was given.

What will you say?

Charity Matters Quotes

“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”

Albert Einstein

Be of value

As the first month of 2014 comes to a close, I thought Albert Einstein’s words were a great way to say goodbye to January.

I hope this post has been of value to you and that you have a wonderful weekend and fantastic February!

Martin Luther King Jr.

“Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.”

Dr. Martin Luther King Junior

Martin Luther King Jr

As you know, today is the day we honor and celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King. I wanted to find one quote that spoke about service and discovered myself being inspired by so many of Dr. King’s incredible words, that have become his legacy.

As we celebrate this day off, in memory of someone who believed we should live our life in service of others…perhaps it should be a day on, rather than a day off? A day to serve in whatever way that speaks to you.

So enjoy your day on and remember  Dr. King’s words.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’

Charity Matters Quotes

“The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own.  No apologies or excuses.  No one to lean on, rely on, or blame.  The gift is yours – it is an amazing journey – and you alone are responsible for the quality of it.  This is the day your life really begins.”

 Bob Moawad

new day, new life running

In the spirit of keeping those New Years resolutions, or perhaps just beginning to pencil them, I thought this was the perfect quote to begin your weekend, your year and perhaps even your life. It is up to each of us to create the world in which we want to live and our journey begins with each new day.  So make this moment, this day and this year the best you possibly can.

The gift is yours, what are you going to do with it?

Charity Matters Quotes

“Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds.”

Charity Matters Quotes

It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air.”

 W.T. Ellis

Christmas giving 1930

Today is the day my children get out of school for Christmas break and the joy is palpable. This is the last Christmas that all of my children will live under the same roof and I must confess I am a bit melancholy. I am so looking forward to Christmas and yet I am mindful of how quickly these holidays seem to pass. This year my nostalgia is running deep.

As I dash around to finish the last-minute details I am determined to savor every moment, every laugh and all the chaos that comes with a house full of children and focus on what matters. In this moment, it is the blessings of family.

Have a joyous weekend!
