Charity Matters Quotes: Evolution

“WHEN WE ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO CHANGE A SITUATION, WE ARE CHALLENGED TO CHANGE OURSELVES.”

 VIKTOR E FRANKL

CM quotes-evolution

The beauty of writing is each week, is that I try to pour my life experiences into a theme, something I’m not sure I would do without you here. As the week began with the movie Wild and the theme of loss, grief and taking on your fears, I realized that evolution was definitely this week’s theme.

The young men from Watts stood in my living room, this past weekend telling their stories of going from the streets of gang ridden Los Angeles into corporate America and then onto 4 year colleges, I realized their struggles originated from the same place….a place where they had no control of their situation. A similar theme from the movie Wild, which dealt with the loss of a parent. Neither had control, however, both had a choice.

It is only when the challenge becomes internal rather than external that the growth, change and evolution occurs. As Victor Frankl so beautifully said, “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

Charity Matters Quotes:MLK

The time is always right to do what is right.”

Martin Luther King

CMQuotes- MLKToday is Martin Luther King Day, a holiday and more importantly a day that is recognized as a national day of service.  MLK day is often referred to as a “Day On” rather than a day off.

I think the hardest thing to do in having a “Day On” is discovering where to begin.

What should I do? What can I do with my children or family?

Here are a few first steps….

doonething.org/actnow
handsonnetwork.org
volunteermatch.org
serviceforpeace.org
nationalservice.gov
servenet.org
idealist.org

Sometimes it simply takes a little faith to know that even the smallest step forward makes a difference.

As Dr. King said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

Enjoy your Day On and know that every step you take big or small makes a difference.

Charity Matters Quotes: Unity

“Unity is strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.”

Mattie Stephenek

APTOPIX France Attacks Rally

Watching the world come together yesterday for democracy and freedom of speech was a historical moment. While this is not a place of politics, it is a place where I am free to voice the work of thousands of people who have come together in unity to make our world better.

Whether you are starting a non-profit, have the freedom to write about one or work together for a common goodness, unity is the glue that makes it all work.

Charity Matters Quotes: Dreaming

” To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan but also believe.”

Anatole France

Keep Dreaming

I know that when January rolls around and we all begin to think about resolutions but perhaps we should simply dream about what we want to accomplish. When I think about all of the non-profit founders I have interviewed, so many of their stories began with a dream. In almost all of the stories I have heard, the common dream was to make life better for someone else.

Why make a resolution?

Just dream and act.

Happy New Years

“Approach the New Year with resolve to find the opportunities hidden in each new day.”

Michael Josephson

Happy New Years:RESOLUTIONS

Very rarely do I look back, it is simply not my style…I am a move ahead kind of person. However, this time of year I like to look back at my past posts and see what resolutions I made to you, myself and how I stacked up. I have to say, this is the one time that a blog is a blessing and a curse.

The blessing is that I am held accountable to each of you in a very public way and the curse is I am held accountable in a very public way.  This year as I looked back and read last years posts I was struck at how spot on it was and remains. So I am sharing the highlights of it here:

Looking back for me, is more than checking items off my list, but rather a time to ask myself the real questions:

  • Was I present and in the moment with my children and family?
  •  Was I a good spouse, daughter, friend?
  • Did I use my gifts and skills to help others?

These are the questions that define me, my life, and these are the items that matter, to me. So while I love making list, setting goals and proudly checking some items off the list…….the reality is that if I don’t ask the real questions to myself regularly, than nothing on list really matters.

So, as I bound into 2015 with excitement, I cherish these last few months with my middle son home and dream of travel and home renovation projects to accomplish….I am mindful that a resolution is simply something to strive for. Being the best person you can be, for yourself and the ones you love is truly the goal.

Years End

“Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.”

Hal Borland

years end, packing up holidays

As we begin taking down the decorations and packing another holiday season away, the rituals that we complain about trigger  an innate reaction in each of us. Packing away the ornaments and decorations becomes a metaphor for packing away another year. We put away the old, we begin cleaning out not just closets but thoughts in our head.

What will you be happy to pack away this year? What wonderful memories will you cherish and keep high on the stack? We all have things to clean out, put away and new items to display. What are those moments you just can’t pack up yet?

This week brings packing, fun and reflection. Take time for all the rituals and realize that each step leads you closer to your New Year.

Last minute gift ideas

“Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect.”

Oren Arnold

Calling all last-minute shoppers……which I am one of!

There is not a sweater, a box big enough or a gift better than the ones above.

This year think about giving the gift of  forgiveness, tolerance, heart, service, charity and respect.

The greatest gifts of all for everyone on your list, especially for you.

Happy Shopping!

Charity Matters Quotes: Love in Action

“Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas.”

“Dale Evans Rogers

More than 6,000 Santa Claus run in the 5.5k race in Madrid

I love this photo and if anything depicts love in action, it is thousands of Santa’s running for a charity race in Spain. The spirit of the season is everywhere, all around our world. We all have so much to do and so little time, which all the more reason to slow down our run and just observe the wonder of the season.

Christmas is love in action.

Its time to focus on the love.

Charity Matter Quotes: Christmas

“I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. “

Charles Dickens

CM quotes- Christmas dickens

Thirteen days and counting….thirteen days to enjoy the beauty, the lights, the wonder and joy that is the holiday season.

Be present, don’t worry about presents.

Be in the moment, for it will slip away if you are not.

Be grateful for all you have.

Be patient…

Be aware that time is a gift to savor with those that you love.

Charity Matters Quotes: Giving

“For it is in giving that we receive.”

St. Francis of Assisi

CM-giving ChristmasVacation

Its Friday and the Christmas season is here! This weekend many of us will get our trees, begin to pull out the boxes of decorations, order our holiday cards or start some Christmas shopping.  All of these are acts of giving.

We decorate to give our families and neighbors a sense of our holiday joy, those Christmas lights are for them. The cards that we agonized over and spend late nights addressing are gifts we are sending to those that we love.

The shopping, is no different. We do this because it is more fun to give than to receive.

This holiday season think about the act of giving as you complete each one of these tasks. My guess is that rather than feeling like a chore, it will bring you joy in knowing that you have made someone else’s day, view or holiday a little bit brighter because you gave.

Black Friday

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”

 William Arthur Ward

black-friday-macys

Today is “Black Friday,” a day when we wake up full, stuffed and ready to charge the malls or just plain charge. Yesterday, we sat with our families watching football, laughing, making and eating a meal together and in a flash its gone.

As we enter into the holiday season, lets remember the moments and the people who bring us joy. Although yesterday seems so long ago, let us remember the best gift we can give ourselves and others is gratitude.  That is the gift to focus on this holiday season.

Thanksgiving Gratitude

At times, our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”

Albert Schweitzer

thanksgiving-mother-and-son-peeling-potatoes-1945

Tomorrow is the day, sadly the one day for many of us, that we take time to be thankful. This year, this day and this moment I am grateful for many things, my guess is for many of the same things you are;  health, family, friends and for those people in my life who have guided me to where I am right now and there are many.

When you are not sure how to begin the process of gratitude, think for a moment of where you are at this moment in time and in your life. How many hands have guided you to this place? Today, I am grateful to each person who has lighted my path and for all of those who have shown me the way.

I am grateful to each of you who continue to inspire, teach and motivate me on this journey. To each and all of you, I wish you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Living your purpose

“Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

living purpose Spirit rally 2013 copy

As I mark my one year anniversary as the Executive Director, of a non-profit youth leadership organization, I find myself full of gratitude. I know it is Thanksgiving week, but this is more than being grateful. I am in awe of the path that lead me to this place where I am in a position to inspire, engage and motivate hundreds of middle and high school students each year. In turn, they are in the position to do the same to me and have.

More than motivation or leadership, what I find brings me the greatest joy is living a life of purpose. I was telling a girlfriend about my job the other day and she responded, “Wow, I didn’t realize you could get paid to make the world better?” Her reaction surprised me a bit. More than that, it made me think that my “payment” is so much more than a check (don’t get me wrong, raises are always appreciated).

Of course this past year has been full of challenges and road blocks but what great adventures aren’t?  Life is journey and when you get to a place on your path, when you get to be your best self and show that to others…..well there is simply no place else I would rather be.

Tasting life twice

“We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.”

Annais Ninn

Painting by Lotte Laserstein

This week I have been thinking about writing. When I saw this quote, I thought it really summed up my experience. Life is so rich and yet sometimes I feel that not everyone really sees what is happening daily right in front of them. I’m sure I don’t catch it all either but what I do see and feel, I am compelled to share.

“Tasting life twice, in the moment and in retrospect,” such beautiful words and a little food for our souls.

I hope this weekend is full of life worth tasting twice.
