Change

“To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly. “

Henri Bergson

cm quote change,

Maybe its spring but change is in the air. Our second son is deciding where he will attend college in the fall. Our eldest is deciding which direction life is taking him. Our youngest is wrapping up the last weeks of middle school, as high school looms ahead. My husband and I,  just stare at each other and find ourselves asking the other, “Where did the time go?”

The change is everywhere but while change is loss, it is also a sign of growth, maturity and ultimately a promise for what is to be.

Happy Easter!

“For I remember it is Easter morn,
And life and love and peace are all new born.”
Alice Freeman Palmer

Happy-Easter-Desktop-Wallpaper-HD-7

For as long as I can remember I have either hunted Easter eggs or hosted an Easter egg hunt. Never in my lifetime, whether in college or as a newlywed did my parents not have an Easter egg hunt for us. Now, as I am entering the mid-section of my life, I think this Sunday maybe the last egg hunt I host.

How I went from the little girl with the basket, to the crazed hostess stuffing eggs and eating twice as many that are being filled, I am not exactly sure?

What I do know is that the joy that comes from hosting, from giving, sharing and delighting in others happiness is sweeter than all the chocolate consumed.

Wishing you a very Happy Easter!

Do Something

I  wondered why somebody didn’t do something.  Then I realized, I am somebody.

Unknown

an-unknown-hero

I love this quote and I think when I reflect on the incredible women that I profiled this week, it is the perfect fit. Two women, very different who simply wanted to make the world better in any tiny way they could. There is nothing tiny about one person simply helping another. It is the ripple effect of their kindness that makes them unknown heroes.

Each of us has the capacity to do a family service project, get a group of friends together for a dinner or simply to find a small way to lift another up.

You are somebody.

Living in the moment

Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.

John Lennon

FullSizeRender-2

I am always planning ahead, it is a blessing and a curse. It makes everything move forward and yet, I often miss the very things that are right in front of me, because I am moving at mach speed. The last few days I have very purposely slowed down….it has been amazing, the beautiful gifts that were right in front of me and the abundance of joy captured. My son catching a fish, a run with my children, a smile from my husband and our grown children jumping on our bed.

Nothing extraordinary but all magnificent, and as I write this I wonder what else have I missed? Since I never look back and only ahead, I am trying to redirect my gaze….remembering to focus on the beauty that is right in front of me.

What is here is right now

“Life is a great and wonderous mystery, and the only thing we know that we have for sure is what is right here and right now. Don’t miss it.”

Leo Buscaglia

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Life has been full these past few months with no rest for the weary. So, I am taking some of my own advice and enjoying some much-needed time off. My oldest is home from college and we are months away from our second son leaving the nest, which seemed like the perfect excuse for a mini vacation.

What is here and now for me is my family and those precious moments of all of us together. What is right here and now for you? Whatever it is I’m sure you don’t want to miss it!

Running low

“I learned never to empty the well of my writing, but always to stop when there was still something there in the deep part of the well, and let it refill at night from the springs that fed it.”

Ernest Hemingway

running low

March is a crazy time of year for me and my family. All three of our sons celebrate March birthdays, it is a busy work time for my business and basically the NBA so got it right in calling it March Madness. So as I burn the candle at both ends and the tank begins to run very low, it is approaching time to refill.

I simply don’t know how to slow down, but I can step away for a few days, enjoy the gift of family and the precious days together. Then as Hemingway so eloquently stated, I can ensure that,” I learned never to empty the well of my writing, but always to stop when there was still something there.”

We can start now

” How lovely to think that no one need wait a moment. We can start now, start slowly, changing the world. How lovely that everyone, great and small, can make a contribution toward introducing justice straightaway. And you can always, always give something, even if it is only kindness.”

Anne Frank

anne frank smile

As I wrapped up the week talking about amazing teenagers and young people,  Anne Frank’s words from decades ago, are as relevant as ever. Teenagers, regardless of the century or decade they are from inspire hope.

As Anne Frank so wisely said, “You can always give something, even if its only kindness!”

You gotta have faith

“You can work miracles by having faith in others. By choosing to think and believe the best about people, you are able to bring out the best in them.”

Bob Moawad

St philip SLD 2015

These past few weeks have been very busy with my day job of running a non-profit leadership organization. Just when I think, I simply have no more to give, these smiling amazing faces  fill my soul and give me such hope for our future.

The beauty of what I do is watching high school students teach leadership to middle school students. You remember those awkward years when you wanted to be anyone but yourself.? The past few weeks I have had the privilege of watching hundreds of high school students teach and more importantly believe in these middle schoolers…..the result is the confident, smiling faces above.

When you believe in someone, you bring out the best in them.  George Michael may have gotten one thing right in the 80’s…you gotta have faith.

Charity Matters Quotes: Give a little bit….

Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little.

Edmund Burke

CM- board meetings

Today, I was supposed to be in Texas attending a board meeting, for an organization I serve on, due to weather our meeting was rescheduled.  Sometimes, it is easy to forget how we share our talents and serve others. Many an evening when I am away from my family attending board meetings, I must confess that I sometimes forget why I am giving my time. Meetings are meetings and doing the business of any organization, non-profit or otherwise, feels simply like business.

Yet, this is how I serve. I often need to remind myself, that this is the greatest way to give my time and talents…even if it seems like a little bit. What is the greatest way you can give yours?

Find yourself

The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others.

Mahatma Gandhi

gandhi service to others

As I mentioned the other day, a number of my friends are disillusioned with their lives, a little lost and are questioning whats next? The more I have pondered about this the more clear it becomes to me.

We feed everything but our souls.  I am as guilty of this as the next, taking care of ourselves is always the last on our list.

We give and give and then we realize that we are empty. We are not sure how it happened but somehow we do not feel complete or full anymore.  The longer we starve the core part of ourselves, the hungrier we become.

What fills you up?  For some it is the simple act of  going to church, for others its being in nature,  lighting a candle, journaling, a moment of solitude to really listen to yourself.

Whatever it takes, to fill that part up inside you, at least once a week…do it.  The fuller you become, the closer you are of finding yourself…..and once you find yourself….then you can follow Gandhi’s advice and lose yourself in the service of others.

It’s really just as  simple as a lost and found.

President’s Day

“Believe that you can and you are half way there!”

Theodore Roosevelt

Presidents Day, Mount Rushmore

Happy President’s Day!

I was recently asked a question about leadership and when I recognized it in my life. To be honest, the question took me a bit by surprise and required some thought. After giving my answer,  I reflected upon a trait that many of us rarely recognize, the gift of leadership.

In a world where we all desperately seek followers, who are our leaders? These are words I often share with the thousands of students who will come through the non-profit leadership organization I have the privilege of working for.

This President’s Day ask yourself the same question, are you a leader or a follower? Be thankful for all of the wonderful leaders we have had in order to enjoy the freedom we all celebrate today.

Happy Presidents Day!

Love

Love is, above all, the gift of oneself.

Jean Anouilh

love yourself

All week we have been bombarded with images of love, flowers, romance and the trappings that come with Valentine’s Day. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy flowers and chocolates as much as the next girl…but sometimes it seems that we miss the point.

The gifts are great and thoughtful but love is all about the gift of oneself. The more love we have, the more there is to give. Rather than obsess about the card, think about what you can give of yourself to another? My guess, is the answer is the greatest gift of all.

Thank you for all the love you share and give to make our world a better place.

Wishing you all a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

Charity Matters Quotes

“The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread”

Mother Teresa

CM quotes- Mother Teresa

As we begin this week of “love” I thought it fitting to focus not on romance and Valentine’s Day, but rather the pure gift of loving one another.

It seems so simple and yet, it is somehow the most difficult. A tiny moment of kindness goes a very long way.

Charity Matters Quotes: Making a difference

“It’s easy to make a buck. It’s a lot tougher to make a difference.”
Tom Brokaw

make a difference phrase on blackboard

As I listened in these non-profit workshops last week about the challenges that non-profits face. You have to admit a business model that relies solely on donations is not optimal? Yet, that is the reality for over 1.9 million non-profit organizations.

At the end of the day, the goal isn’t about making a buck but rather about making a difference for others.
