Oh October!

“Ah, September! You are the doorway to the season that awakens my soul… but I must confess that I love you only because you are a prelude to my beloved October.”

Peggy Toney Horton

oh-october

Well hello October!

I’m not sure how you snuck up on us, but I am so glad that you are here.

October means football, fall leaves, corn chowder, pumpkin carving and trick or treating.

October reminds us of the beauty all around, and is natures way of telling us to be grateful.

Here is to a month of gratitude and joy spent with ones you love.

Happy October everyone!

Fall is here

“Autumn is the season of change.”

Taoist proverb

first-day-of-fall-16

Yesterday was the first day of fall. In LA, we had an unusual crisp, 75 degree September day with big puffy clouds and the tiniest hint that perhaps Mother nature was up to something. As I drove home from my son’s high school football game, I felt joyful.  Let me be clear, it wasn’t the score of the game that put me in the mood, but rather the feeling that change was in the air.

There is something that happens with change, it brings little pieces of hope and inspiration. As I sat in crazy 5 o’clock LA traffic, with the sun roof open, I had my first glimpse of fall.

No, it wasn’t a tree with turning leaves, but rather a women whose car was broken down. She had a look of fear and panic on her face and then something magical happened….two separate men parked their cars and rushed out to push the women and her broken car through crazy rush hour traffic.

Perhaps, an everyday occurrence…..but to witness chivalry, kindness and compassion, to this Angeleno, the first and best sign of fall…..and the feeling that change and hope was in the air.

Time for school

“Education is not filling a pail but the lighting of a fire.”

William Butler Yeats

back to school quote

It is amazing that learning as an adult, is something so exciting and fun.  My memories of school, which I liked, would not necessarily be described that way.

Today, there is nothing I love more than learning something new and being involved with education.

I spend a great deal of time volunteering on a number of school boards because an education is truly the greatest gift you can give anyone.

So, as we begin another school year, it is time to celebrate all those who volunteer to make our schools great and perhaps light a fire for those of you who might just want to go back to school….to volunteer, that is!

After-all, there is always something to learn.

Joan Didion

” I’m not telling you to make the world better….

I’m just telling you to live in it.

Not just endure it, not just suffer it,not just pass through it, but to live in it.

To look at it.

To try to get the picture. To live recklessly. To take chances.

To make work and take pride in it.

To seize the moment.”

Joan Didion

Joan-Didion

I am a huge fan of Joan Didion and her writing. Her book The Year of Magical Thinking was a gift to me after losing my mom. Her writing, if you have never read it, gets so deeply to the point.

I know, I do try to share inspiration to make our world better each week, however, this quote spoke to me so completely that when I read it I began to cry.

All we have is now and this moment. So let’s make the best of every one we have!

Time to go

time to go

“You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You’re on your own.
And you know what you know.
You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”
Dr. Seuss

It’s that time of year again and our children are all packing up and leaving the nest. Moments of sadness, joy and everything in between. Excited for them to fly and yet so sad to see them go… They say a parents job is never done but there is something about the process of packing and leaving that makes you feel that a large part of it is…

I could not be more proud of the men we have raised but watching them leave the nest, just never seems to get easier.

Humanity

“When we recognize our love of humanity, we do whatever has to be done to express that love to and with others. That is called service.”

John Roger

humanity

Traveling the past two weeks and seeing how people live, both past and present, was a renewal in my appreciation for humanity. Our creativity, dedication, fortitude and love for one another. The story of love and kindness simply never gets old.

Remembering Elie Wiesel

“Once you bring life into the world, you must protect it. We must protect it by changing the world.”

Elie Wiesel

This past week we lost a legend. A Holocaust survivor, a witness to man’s darkest side, and was called a “messenger to mankind” for his observations on humanity.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner and the acclaimed author used his voice to inspire people to remember the atrocities of the Holocaust and to move forward in peace.

In light of this last few weeks events, in Orlando and Dallas, and the growing separation our country is experiencing, never have Elie Wiesel’s words been more relevant and true.

“The time must come. It’s enough — enough to go to cemeteries, enough to weep for oceans. It’s enough,” he said. “There must come a moment — a moment of bringing people together.”

We must never forget.

Happy Happy 4th of July!

“From every mountain side
Let Freedom ring.”

Samuel F. Smith, “America”

Happy happy 4th of july

The 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays, everyone is happy. There are no gifts to buy or wrap, no fancy meals to make, a barbecue and watermelon is enough and of course, its summertime.

More than any of that, the 4th is a time to celebrate our great nation, to feel that pride and love of country. Right now in a world and country divided over so many issues, this is a day when we are all one…we are simply and proudly Americans.

I hope your 4th is filled with fireworks, family, fun and a moment to feel grateful to live in this remarkable country.

Let freedom ring!

Happy 4th of July!

Ahhh…summer

“Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it”.

Russel Baker

ahh summer

Ahhhh…..summer! You are finally here! Yesterday was the longest and if you’re in LA, what I hope will have been, the hottest day of the year. The summer solstice has passed and now it is official, summer has arrived!

Summer is time to take pause, slow the pace and simply be and my favorite season of them all.

Running a non-profit summer camp doesn’t make it the slowest time of year,  but it certainly makes it a magical time.

So here is to a great summer, full of fun, sun, joy and simply being….

Unity

“Where there is unity there is always victory.”

Publilius Syrus

While all of us are still trying to process what exactly happened to our world last Saturday night, in Orlando, moments of unity are occurring all over our globe. From the rally in London, with the release of 49 balloons to monuments lit up from the Sydney Harbor Bridge to the Eiffel Tower, and beyond.

The world is coming together in love and unity, almost like a page from The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

Love always wins and overcomes. The world is speaking from their hearts and they are filled with love.

Where there is unity there is always victory.

Acceptance

“Our uniqueness, our individuality, and our life experience mold us into fascinating beings.

I hope we can embrace that.

I pray we may all challenge ourselves to delve into the deepest resources of our hearts to cultivate an atmosphere of understanding, acceptance, tolerance, and compassion.

We are all in this life together.”

Linda Thompson

After a weekend filled with love and celebration, to wake up the horrific news yesterday morning was devastating. Trying to find light in the wake of such a tragedy is never easy. While one man destroyed the lives of so many, it is our ability to hold one another up, continue to love and accept one another that extinguishes the darkness and brings in the light.

As the quote says, we are all in this life together.

The great one…

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”

Muhammad Ali

This weekend we lost a great one. A man born into a family of pre-Civil War era American slaves, who experienced the segregated South first hand and was determined to use his life to help others, which is exactly what he did.

Muhammad Ali devoted his life to helping promote civil rights, cross-cultural understanding, interfaith relations, hunger relief, and world peace. He did this through a variety of actions and causes. According to the National Constitution Center, he has been responsible for providing over 232 million meals to serve the hungry in such countries as Indonesia, Mexico, Cuba, Morocco, and Cote d’Ivoire, to name a few.

In addition, to his work abroad as a Goodwill Ambassador, he also used his fame and success to bring attention to causes such as Make A Wish Foundation, Special Olympics, Muhammad Ali Parkinson’s Center and the Muhammad Ali Center in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

The Muhammad Ali Center’s mission sums up the legend’s life and legacy best, “To promote, respect, hope, and understanding and to inspire adults and children everywhere to be as great as they can be.”

He was great and continues to inspire us all, to do the same.

Well hello June

“How did it get so late so soon?

Its night before its afternoon.

December is here before its June.

My goodness how the time has flewn.

How did it get so late so soon?”

Dr. Seuss

june

 Well hello June!

I’m not sure how you arrived so early this year, but here you are.

June means school is almost out, graduation, Father’s Day and most importantly the beginning of summer.

So, today as we welcome this wonderful month, it is time to be happy and optimistic about the sunny days ahead.

Everyday, is a day full of gratitude, but especially June 1st.
