Charity Matters Quotes

“Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts.”

Janice Maeditere

xmas opening heart

And so the count down begins, 9 days until Christmas!  Less than two weeks left to soak up the spirit of the season and too open up our hearts to the magic of the holiday. While we begin our week with shopping list, cards to address and gifts to wrap, lets give our selves a moment to stop and enjoy all the wonder that surrounds us.

Charitable Children continued

“Children must early learn the the beauty of generosity. They are taught to give what they prize most, that they may taste the happiness of giving.”

Charles Alexander Eastman

Raising philanthropic children

This post was originally intended to follow up The Raising Charitable Children post. However, due to the passing of Nelson Mandela it was bumped back in line.Regardless of this post’s timing, the  message of Charitable Children is timeless.

So with that said, it is upon us to show by example and lead the way to those that do not know where to go. Giving is no different than someone asking directions who is lost. Simply show them and they will learn the way, regardless of age.

Mandela

“A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of.”

Nelson Mandela

Yesterday we lost an icon, legend, peacemaker and a man who simply put, just made our world better. There are very few words you can write that have not been said about Nelson Mandela. So rather than tell you what you already know, I think we can all take a page from his amazing life and apply it to our own.

There is no greater tribute than to put his legacy into action.

Giving thanks

“Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.”

W.T. Purkiser

rockwell-thanksgiving

Tomorrow is the day we gather to give thanks for all our blessings. A day to celebrate with friends and family and to load up our plates. Many of you will feed the homeless, invite someone to join your family celebration, help cook and clean or host a house full. While Thanksgiving comes just once a year, sharing your gifts with others is the blessing that lasts all year round.

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Charity Matters Quotes

“When the heart grieves over what is has lost, the spirit rejoices over what it has left.”

Sufi Epigram

mom and dad

November 8th is a bittersweet day in our house every year. Once upon a time it was a joyous day that celebrated both my dad’s and my husband’s birthdays. Decades worth of family photos, with big happy smiles and many candles on a shared cake, confirm the memories.  Eleven years ago the smiles went away, when my mom was killed in a car accident, on November 9th.

Today, the memories linger, the wounds heal and the celebration begins. Tomorrow we will remember my mom and Sunday we will celebrate my Dad’s 74th birthday. This quote was made for this moment. We will always miss my mom but in this moment, we rejoice in all the smiles and candles that are celebrated this year.

Just thinking about smiling makes the corners of mouth turn towards the sky.We will be carving big smiles on our pumpkins this weekend.  I hope however you celebrate the season, that you have a wonderful fall weekend!

Charity Matters Quotes

“Once you choose hope, anything’s possible.”

 Christopher Reeve

In light of this week’s story on Inheritance of Hope, I found this quote a fitting follow up. I also loved that only a Superman could have blessed us with these beautiful words. I hope your weekend is wonderful.

Charity Matters Quotes

“Bittersweet October.  The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter.”

 Carol Bishop Hipps

October

I’m not exactly sure how October snuck up on us, but it is here. So enjoy the season, the month and the moments because they all go by, simply way too fast.

Happy Friday!

Charity Matters Quotes

“Remember, with each act of charity, you get closer to the person you want to be.”

Anonymous

diannaThere really is no image to fit this quote. Rather the question becomes, when you give of your self who do you want to be? Mother Teresa, Princess Di, the Dali Lama?

Or simply your best self?

Charity Matters Quotes

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”

Muhammad Ali

feeding the poor

Service. It comes in so many forms that often times we are giving of ourselves and don’t even realize the impact we are having on another. This week we started talking about children going green at their schools. Every time they recycle, use less trash and conserve energy they are serving the greater good. Whether you are helping out at your child’s school, serving on a board, volunteering or running in a charity event…its all service.

One is not better than the other, they are all the best gift you can give….yourself.

Happy Friday !

September

fall tailgating

“The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze.”

John Updike, September

As a huge fan of summer, I must be honest that September is often a hard month for me. Yet, there is something lovely about routine and exciting about a new season full of possibilities. I hope this September finds you enjoying the possibilites.
