A happy life

I was recently reading an interview with Deepak Choprah and he was asked the question,”What is the secret of living a happy life?” I had to share his answer with you.

The answer, “The secret to a happy life is to recognize that no matter what the situation, there’s a creative opportunity in it.  Also, finding meaning and purpose in your life to make a contribution. And ultimately the secret is to make other people happy.”

Hoping I made you happy sharing this and wishing you bliss this holiday weekend. Happy Memorial Day!

The dreams continue

The topic of dreaming just seems to keep popping up and yes, I know we have all seen this (all 47,000,000,000 hits) but when you watch a real live dream happen in front of your very eyes, its just magic and it never gets old…..just better.

So, although this isn’t a non-profit, it is a dream and I hope this inspires you today to trust your own dreams. Susan Boyle didn’t give up on hers and she is an inspiration to us all.

Dream Big!

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”

Harriet Tubman

This is for all the Susan G. Komen’s, The Make A Wish Foundation and the other 1.9 million non-profits in our country. They all started with a dreamer and all of those dreamers have changed the world for the better. What are you dreaming about?

A Helping Hand

I have a confession to make, and to those of you that know me, this will not come as a surprise….but I love reading my horoscope. I think of it as a helpful road map that often readjusts my course for the day and since I have a horrible sense of direction it can be quite helpful. So the other day when this appeared I loved the message and thought it applied to all of us, not just Gemini’s.

A Helping Hand (From the Daily Om)
Gemini Daily Horoscope

You will likely help all who need your aid without hesitation today, even when you must put aside your own concerns to focus on those of others in order to do so. A benevolent mood can guide your thoughts and actions, pointing you toward opportunities to act charitably in your home, your workplace, and out on the town.

You may be surprised to discover today that your kindhearted approach to life inspires the people you meet to behave more charitably. Even if you never see the effects your helpfulness has had on others, your environment, or the world at large, you can be confident that you are making a difference by simply endeavoring to live in accordance with your values.

The simplest way to spread a charitable message among all those with whom we interact is to freely offer assistance whenever we encounter someone who might benefit from our help. Though we often associate philanthropy with the transfer of resources such as possessions or money, the greatest resource we have in our charitable arsenal is our willingness to be there for individuals in need.

Whether our lives are rich or poor, we can give others the gift of our benevolence, thereby proving to all we come into contact with that anyone can make a difference.

We not only benefit others by being helpful; we also share a message of goodwill that they then spread by adopting a similarly altruistic attitude. Your innate goodness will give you the means to share the joy of charity with others today.

We all get a little lost sometimes so I hope this map gives you some direction today, I know it certainly helped me.

Faith’s Lodge

There are times when there are just not words. One of those times is the loss of a child. There is nothing that can be said that heals the empty place left behind by one you loved so deeply.

Yet, families have to begin to pick up the pieces of their lives and try to find a place of hope when it seems there isn’t any. That place is Faith’s Lodge.Org. Faith’s Lodge was started by Mark and Susan Laceck who lost their infant daughter and were determined to help others with her legacy.

What they created was a beautiful lodge where families who have lost children can go together to relax, create new memories, reflect, grieve and heal.

Faith’s Lodge is a place where hope grows. Anytime there is hope there is a beginning.

Service Dog shows real meaning of Service

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

John Fitzgerald Kennedy

I came across this video by happenstance and thought the message of service was beautiful. Enjoy.

First Communion: A Story of Giving

Sometimes Charity doesn’t need a non-profit but rather a simple act of kindness.  A few years ago I received a call from a friend about a young 10-year-old girl dying from bone cancer and he needed help.

My friend, Father John, was a chaplain at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. It was days before Thanksgiving weekend and this little girl really wanted her First Holy Communion and the celebration that went with it for her family.   However, her family was very poor and could not afford a dress, a veil or a cake.  The Chaplain asked me to help.

I spent 2 days trying to track down a white dress, size 14, in November and gave up. I had a lot to do for the holidays and my goodwill was running low. I did, however, go to the bakery, tell the little girl’s story and they made the most beautiful cake which through teary eyes they gave me as their gift.

Next, I ran into a friend and complained about my challenge with finding this dress and she ran into her house and came down with the most beautiful lace veil to cover the little girl’s now bald head.

My own children were about the same age at the time and made this little girl cards and asked their friends to do the same. One friend’s mother owned a jewelry store. When she heard the story she asked me to come by and she would have something special for the family to give her on her special day.

Things were coming together, however I still didn’t have the dress. I had asked everyone I knew with daughters, called every store and was telling my dear friend on the phone the night before this celebration was to take place. As we spoke she was opening a package from her cousin in Virginia. My girlfriend had young daughters not even close to the size needed for this dress.

As she opened her package, with the phone in one ear she said, “You are not going to believe this, but my cousin just sent the most beautiful new white dress, size 14 for the girls.” We were speechless.

Thanksgiving day Father John came by and I had cards, a beautiful lace veil, a gorgeous wedding type cake, a perfect white dress, size 14 and a navy blue jewelry box that contained a diamond cross on a delicate platinum chain. Father John was near tears as we all were.

That day he gave the little girl her First Holy Communion in the hospital with all of her family there. She told Father John. “She felt like a princess.” The family was in awe of everything. One month later, a few days after Christmas she was buried in her beautiful white dress, her white veil and wearing the diamond cross she loved so dearly.

I think of this story and this girl often and every time I think of the miracle of kindness. The difference that simple gestures make and just how much Charity really matters.

Kindness Girl

“What Wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?”

Jean Jacques Rousseau

Kindness. Just the word makes the corners of your mouth turn up just a bit into a smile. Without kindness there would be no charity or non-profits. It all starts with kindness.

So the other day as I was reading a magazine I came across the story of Patience Salgado, the Kindness Girl.

While, Patience doesn’t run a non-profit she helps people spread her message of random acts of kindness through her blog KindnessGirl.com. She shares basic ideas that she calls Guerrilla Goodness, which she describes as “intentional, anonymous acts of kindness performed in playful, creative ways for strangers, friends and family. Take a look.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Va6TksxffNw]

Patience recently said in an interview, “The beauty and power of kindness, is that it doesn’t take a lot of money. It takes a willing heart.” That is Charity that matters in its truest form. Kindness and a willing heart.

911 Hero Portraits

A hero is someone who gives selflessly, who sacrifices and who makes a difference. On September 11th the stories of heroism and bravery were boundless.

Sometimes, however, heroes show up in unexpected ways. Darrell and Kimberly Lynn, received a call one night from the mother of a fallen soldier asking if they could paint a portrait of her deceased son. The Lynns not only painted the portrait but they started the non-profit HeroPortraits.Com with the goal of honoring all our nations’ heroes.

The goal of Hero Portraits is able to honor those who have sacrificed themselves serving in the Armed Forces, Police, Fire, Coast Guard, FBI, ATF, and the many other Civil Servants that protect us every day. Hero Portraits considers it an honor to give a portrait that will comfort the family of a hero and be handed down for generations to come of those who have helped to keep us safe, protect our rights, and serve the citizens of the United States of America and around the world.

God Bless our Heroes.

A little girl’s birthday wish…..

I am always so intrigued and inspired by the rebirth that comes from terrible loss. Life is a mystery but how tragedy can turn around into something beautiful for others always gives me hope. Hope in humanity, hope in goodness and just a chance to perhaps see a bigger plan.  Hope that one little person really can make a difference.

Rachel’s story is just that….

Charity Profile: Theresa Gartland

“If you want to be remembered, do something memorable.”

Charity Matters wants you to get to know these inspirational people that will be remembered for their remarkable gifts of compassion to those in need. Theresa Gartland is exactly that, remarkable Here are her answers to Charity Matter’s Questionnaire.

What Charity Matters to you?

Urban Compass, of course!

What or who inspires you?

My students inspire me every day!  Even though they live in a very violent and depressing neighborhood, they are the most resilient, positive, happy children I have ever met. They have a thirst for knowledge and a strong desire to succeed; they cherish every moment they are at Urban Compass.  They are risk takers – they want to explore and you can feel their excitement the minute they step into the UC van because they know they are going on an adventure they have never been on, exploring a new community, learning more about what life has to offer.  They don’t take for granted what for most of us are everyday experiences.

When did you realize that you made a difference?

It’s in the little moments that you realize you are making a difference in these children’s lives. It’s when they give you a hug and hold you tight and won’t let go.  It’s when you see them quietly working on their homework, striving to be their best.  It’s when a student says, “Thanks Ms. G- I want to be a good person when I grow up and stay out of trouble, just like you.”  When a teacher, principal or parent lets me know the student’s math or reading scores are improving because of Urban Compass.  It’s when I get home at night and reflect on the day, thinking about the smiles I saw, the laughter I heard, and the hugs I received; and the tears I cry are coming from a place of compassion, knowing that we have provided a place for these children to create positive childhood memories that they wouldn’t have otherwise.

If you could get everyone to do one small act of kindness, what would it be?

I don’t know if this is an act of kindness but a small thing we all can do is to validate each other more.  Whether you are 8, 28, or 48 years old, you still want to hear that you are doing the right thing, that you are a good person, and that you are making good decisions in life. I see it all the time with the students I work with:  they want approval, they want recognition, and they want to know that they are ok.  I am constantly looking at each one of them in the eyes and saying “I’m proud of you!”  Those words are so powerful, so meaningful.  The students respond with a smile and you can see new confidence in their eyes.  We don’t tell our friends, partners, spouses, children, parents, students, and co-workers often enough that we are proud of them.

What is your motto?

“The best thing you can do is help those who want to be helped.”
